Gary Wilson booked his place in the Winners’ Group of BetVictor Championship League Snooker with a 3-0 victory over Kyren Wilson in the Group 3 Final at Morningside Arena, Leicester.
The World Championship semi-finalist is making his tournament debut and having lost at the semi-final stage of Group Two, topped the league phase of Group Three before blasting past Matthew Selt to set up a final with namesake Kyren.
Gary took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five match but looked to have presented an opportunity for Kettering man Kyren when he missed a blue to the middle pocket with 48 on the board. However, the current German Masters champion wasn’t able to capitalise, and Gary completed his victory at the next visit.
“I struggled in the first group but felt I played a lot better in this group,” said Wilson, who shared the £500 group high-break prize with Xiao Guodong after both made 134s.
“I missed some daft balls but generally I scored well. The tables are playing really, really nice and scoring is my game. There are things to work on in my game but scoring is my strong point.
“It has been nice to play a couple of groups but you don’t want to keeping going too long because you want to get into Winners’ Group. It’s nice to get through and I can look forward to March.”
The group witnessed a BetVictor Championship League record 24 century breaks, eight of them made by Gary Wilson and six by Kyren. Gary had earlier topped the group table with five wins form his six matches, and then defeated Selt 3-1 in his semi-final. Kyren defeated Tom Ford in the deciding frame of their best-of-five semi-final match.
Staged at Morningside Arena, Leicester, BetVictor Championship League Snooker is broadcast on a host of betting websites and on zhibo.tv, one of the biggest sports streaming platforms in China.
Kyren Wilson, Ford, Selt and Graeme Dott, who finished fifth on the group table, will now return for Group Four on Wednesday morning, where they will be joined by Ali Carter, Scott Donaldson and Joe Perry. Having finished sixth and seventh respectively in Group Three, Ben Woollaston and Xiao Guodong are eliminated from the competition.
BetVictor Championship League Snooker is a venture between Matchroom Sport and Perform where 25 of the game’s elite players compete for their share of a total prize pot of up to £205,000.
