Tyson Fury comes to the Morningside Arena

“THE biggest character in boxing and the best heavyweight of his era by a mile” is coming to Leicester.

That is how promoter Clifton Mitchell describes Tyson Fury.

Mitchell is bringing ‘The Gypsy King’ to the Morningside Arena to meet fans on Monday, December 6.

Mitchell was heavyweight contender himself, fighting for the British and European titles, and has been in Fury’s corner several times in his career.

Mitchell was there in Dusseldorf in November, 2015, when he pulled off one of the best results in British boxing history. Fury bamboozled Wladimir Klitschko out of his heavyweight belts with a jaw-dropping display and has since won battles with drugs and depression to engage in a classic trilogy with Deontay Wilder.

That rivalry came to an end last month when Fury got off the floor to flatten Wilder in the 11th round in Las Vegas. “Inside and outside the ring, Tyson is a one off,” said Mitchell, who has champions Florian Marku and Myron Mills and top women’s prospect Sandy Ryan in his gym.

“Tyson is the most honest person you will meet and when he’s boxing, his ring craft and heart are second to none. “He knows how to drain his opponents, mentally and physically. He pulls their arms off, then he pulls their legs off – and then he drowns them.

“Nobody can do what he does. He is the best heavyweight of his era by a country mile.”

Fury also has links to Leicestershire. He trained for a spell at the Heart of England gym in Hinckley under Nick Griffin and made his amateur debut in the function suite at the town’s Marston’s Stadium.

Fury has relatives living in the County and has been to the Morningside Arena before, to cheer on brother Tommy when he had his second professional fight there in March, 2019.
